A FORMER back-up dancer for rappers Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim is hoping to shake up the Melbourne fitness industry.
Ellena Takos, also a former dancer for the NBA Brooklyn Nets, said: “Melbourne is very yoga and pilates.
“There’s not as much cardio. We’re trying to make it a little more lively.”
Takos, who moved from New York to Melbourne for love, has brought her star power as a cycling instructor at boutique lifestyle studio, Bodhi & Ride.
“It’s like a 45-minute personal training session, all on a bike. It feels like you’re dancing and it’s a lot of fun,” Takos said.
“We’re hoping to try and revolutionise the Melbourne fitness industry.”
Takos used to teach at SoulCycle in New York, which has clients like Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Obama.
She said she doesn’t refer to her cycling classes as spin.
“I think spin has negative connotations to it,” she said. “With spin, you think local gym, a spin bike, and someone with a timer telling you to run.
“I’d rather start with a fresh slate and change the way people are seeing it.”
But dancing will always be Takos’ first love.
“Dancing has taken me everywhere, including the film television and commercial world,” she said. “But it’s a very competitive industry.
“You hear so many ‘no’s’ before you hear the right ‘yes.’ But the big thing in the industry right now is knowing your worth and working with people who treat dancers well.
“If you put in the time and the effort, and you’re good enough, you should own that.”
